In the Words of RuPaul: You Better (Net)Work.
Damn. I’m tired. I’m still mentally exhausted from the holidays (even though I had some time off? Is life without childcare really time off? DM me your thoughts.). I really want sweat pants, hot tea, bad television, a heated blanket and silence.
Yup. Those are the thoughts in my mind right now. Yup. I talked about killing it on Instagram. I have shouted out that I’m coming for 2019. But damn. It’s cold outside.
This is a part of all our brains. It’s that voice that lures you back under the covers when your alarm goes off to do yoga or go to that insanely early exercise class. It’s the voice that tells you that you can just cancel going to that event tonight- there will be so many other people there to fill the room- no one will know you didn’t show up. You all know who I’m talking about- that girl (or boy!)- the one who falls short- the one who wants to be comfortable in their isolation.
I say F*?! that girl.
I know. You’re saying, ‘Heather! It’s so hard though. I REALLY AM tired, I REALLY AM all those things.’.
Let me tell you a story.
When I started NibMor back in 2009, we had very little money. We raised money from friends and family but anyone who has ever put a physical product out into the world will tell you, it takes a lot of money. And I mean a lot- especially if you want that brand to be nationally recognized and you want people all over the country to have it in their pantries. To make matters worse, we had no marketing budget. In fact, no one involved at the time really had any true marketing experience and the landscape for marketing was changing at lightening speed (2009 my friends- Facebook, which no one really understood and Twitter- what the hell was a chocolate brand supposed to do with that?!).
When my partner and I sat down to talk about marketing and brand awareness we could only come up with one solution: GET OUR ASSES OUT THERE. If you listened to Episode 11 of my podcast, The Fifth Pallet Almost Killed Me, this will sound familiar. We developed a plan. The one thing we could sacrifice was some of our product and our time. Especially since in the beginning I made many production errors- we had plenty of warped, broken and partially bloomed chocolate bars, that still tasted good, to choose from. Instead of throwing them out, we broke them down into attractive little pieces and got on every list for events, parties and networking that we could.
I am often heard saying: Do not underestimate the power of your network or the people you surround yourself with.
Networks are powerful things. If you have a group of people who know and like you- they will move mountains for you and you never know where a relationship will lead you. When I left NibMor and went to work for a beauty brand, it sort of seemed like, ‘Huh. How will Heather move from food to beauty?’. Well, I called everyone I knew in retail- all the people I had such great relationships with from food and I got them to introduce me to any person they could on the beauty side. And you know what? It worked. I was able to leverage my existing network to get a seat at the table of another one.
How? Because people like working and going to bat for people they like. This is why it can seem like everyone in Hollywood does movies with the same people and that every job you go out for is being filled with an executives nephew.
Bottom line is- the more people you know, the more opportunity there will always be for you.
So I get my ass out there. Every time. (Well, unless I have the flu or something- that’s a reason to stay home!) And on a sentimental note, by putting myself out there, I not only have had great success and opportunity in business but I’ve also met some of the most generous and inspiring people. I am happy and honored to call many of them friends.
